The professional archive of Robert Gray Hon FAIPP, documenting Australia from Melbourne to the Barrier Reef, 1968–2001. Entirely on film.
Robert Gray began his career as a cadet photographer at The Age newspaper in Melbourne in 1968. Over the next three decades, he would work across press, commercial, architectural, food, and portrait photography — documenting Australia through a period of extraordinary change.
From the newsrooms of Melbourne to the tropical north of Queensland, from Hong Kong harbour to the Great Barrier Reef, Robert's camera captured the people, places, and moments that defined an era. All on film. All meticulously catalogued.
Now retired in Brisbane, Robert has spent years digitising his extensive archive — building a custom light table, developing cataloguing systems, and preserving over 12,000 images for future generations.
A selection from the 12,461 digitised images spanning Robert's career. These are just a taste of what the full searchable archive contains.
Some jobs in the archive carry stories that go beyond the photograph. Celebrities, crime scenes, historic moments — the camera was there.
Celebrity
Before it was law, the Federal Government needed Australians to wear bike helmets. They called on the country's most recognisable music personality — and Robert was behind the camera for the entire campaign.
Crime
In 1980, bookshop owner Maria James was found murdered at her High Street shop in Thornbury. Robert photographed the crime scene and investigation for the National Times. The case remains unsolved and was reopened in 2017.
Sport
One of the great grand finals of the era. Robert captured the intensity of the day, including legendary figures Percy Jones and Alex Jesaulenko. Personal work shot on his own time, preserving a moment in Australian sporting history.
Historical
A royal visit to Melbourne. Robert was commissioned to photograph the Queen and Prince Philip during their appearance at Government House — one of many encounters with public figures throughout his press career.
Robert kept copies of published articles and clippings from The Age, National Times, and other publications. These could be scanned and linked to their corresponding archive jobs.
"Television personality Ian 'Molly' Meldrum joined Federal Transport Minister Peter Morris yesterday to launch a national bicycle helmet awareness campaign..."
"Police are seeking witnesses following the murder of Maria James, 38, found in her second-hand bookshop on High Street, Thornbury. Inspector Delanis is leading the investigation..."
"An LPG explosion at the gasworks sent a fireball visible across the city. Photographer Robert Gray was among the first on scene..."
"His Excellency Sir Ninian Stephen presented the annual industry awards at a ceremony attended by The Age editor Creighton Burns and other distinguished guests..."
These are sample representations. Robert's actual newspaper clippings could be scanned and displayed alongside their archive entries.
